Oklahoma Liability Insurance Requirements

In the state of Oklahoma, all registered vehicles are required to carry minimum liability insurance coverage for bodily injury and property damage. However, this does not prevent some people from driving without the required amount of coverage. Underinsured drivers have a small amount of insurance coverage, but not enough to pay for your accident-related costs.

Oklahoma’s minimum liability insurance requirements are:

  • $25,000 for injury or death of one person
  • $50,000 total for injury or death of more than one person
  • $25,000 total for property damage

In normal circumstances, you will file a claim with the other driver’s insurance company to pursue a settlement for injuries and property damage. However, if the other party’s insurance policy does not fully cover your injuries and vehicle damage, you will generally only have 2 options. You may file a personal injury claim directly against the other driver, or you may file a claim with your own insurance company through your uninsured motorist policy.

The Benefits of Uninsured Motorist Coverage

An uninsured or underinsured motorist policy is an optional coverage plan. If you are involved in an accident with an underinsured driver, you will be able to file a claim directly with your own insurance company. This will allow you to seek compensation after an accident, even if the other party does not have enough insurance coverage.
